BEST LEVADAS AND HIKING TRAILS IN MADEIRA

1- PONTA DE SÃO LOURENÇO

This magnific trail along São Lourenço peninsula, in the eastern area of the island, offers the opportunity of observing the South and North coasts. The peninsula, classified as a Partial Nature Reserve, holds ground vegetation full of endemic plants. This walk is near the ocean and the views are stunning.

 

Ponta de São Lourenço (beginning and end) > 8 km > 3:30 hours > Difficulty: Medium

2- LEVADA 25 FOUNTAINS (RABAÇAL AND RISCO)

The trail leads to a truly enchanted area in the interior of the Island, along a levada which began being used in 1855. From Rabaçal it is possible to take several paths. A beautiful way to see the Laurel Forest and the amazing views together with waterfalls.

 

Rabaçal (beginning and end) > 9 km > 4 hours

3- CALDEIRÃO VERDE

This levada dates from the 17th century and it leads us through the mountains and places so beautiful it takes your breath away.

Right on the middle of the huge mountains of Madeira.

 

 

Parque Florestal das Queimadas (beginning and end) > 13 km > 6 hours

4- LEVADA DO REI

An unforgettable route that reveals both the endemic vegetation and that which was introduced after the discovery of the island. At first, you’ll still see the villages, but once you dive in the interior of the forest, you’ll discover a luxurious path that has more than five centuries.

 

 

São Jorge (begining and end) > 10 km > 4 hours > Difficulty: Easy

5- LEVADA DO ALECRIM

A family friendly route along a soft, heather ornate course which leads to the beautiful Dona Beja Lagoon. Diving is imperative.
 


Rabaçal (begining and end) > 6,8 km > 2:30 h > Difficulty: Low

6- PICO AREEIRO TO PICO RUIVO

It’s a trail which requires physical stamina, always up the hill, between the two highest peaks in Madeira.

On the way, stopping is imperative due to the breathtaking landscape.

Pico do Areeiro (beginning), Pico Ruivo (end) > 7 km > 3:30 hours > Difficulty: High

7- VEREDA DOS BALCÕES

This route is not very demanding in terms of effort, but is so rewarding nonetheless: it offers the experience of crossing into the Madeiran Laurissilva forest, reaching a viewpoint with fabulous views and also do some amazing birdwatching.
